What would happen if I connect my 24VDC adapter to a 6VDC lantern battery in series?

What would happen if I connect my 24VDC adapter to a 6VDC lantern battery in series? Or potentially several 6VDC lantern batteries, to up the voltage. If this helps, I plan to use for iontophoresis, just not sure if this is safe. Thanks
