can I use tempera paint to paint a lantern?

I want to make a halloween lantern using old spaghetti sauce jars. I need to paint them orange and then paint on jack o lantern faces. Can I use tempera paint to do this? Will it melt or anything?

      For once night halloween thing and its just for it would think acrylics would think acrylics would think.
      For it would be your first choice but if its just for once night halloween thing and its all youve got go for once.
